Havoc, written and directed by Gareth Evans, certainly lives up to its title when the action starts. Evans transforms complete chaos into a cohesive, multi-layered, and truly exciting spectacle, from a dynamic opening chase to two climactic shootouts. It is reminiscent of classic action films, especially those from Hong Kong in the 1980s and 1990s, but it has a gritty, grainy appearance that makes it feel unique. The tale isn't horrible either, despite its complicated and morally dubious messiness. It centers on Walker (Tom Hardy), a big-city homicide detective who is the walking, talking embodiment of the worst aspects of his line of work. The city itself is kept unidentified. He has presented the idea of murdering a man, burying the corpse in a barrel in a lake, and taking a large sum of money that is stashed away in some filthy criminal hideout. His introductory voiceover says that some of this man's activities cannot be justified like the rest of his corrupt behaviors, and that since he has now passed that line, Walker cannot turn back—or something drearily nihilistic like that notion.
