The movie opens with Elliot and his daughter Ridley heading toward a little airport that leads to a far-off location in the gorgeous mountains. Ridley is following a taxi that has been delayed for a long time. Elliot speeds up, worried about their delay, and misses an animal running onto the road. When they get out of the car, they realize it's probably a unicorn. Elliot savagely beats it till it is dead after Ridley had a deep experience touching its glowing horn. This horrific event overshadows their presence at Odell, his wife Belinda, and their son Shepard's house, making the scenario much more interesting - and destructive.
